The sea is often rough along this coastline, although this makes it ideal for windsurfing. This large beach of golden sand and occasional gravel is backed by sand dunes in places. Charco del Palo, Lanzarote, Canary Island - Nudist Village and small beachesThe nudist village of Charco del Palo is east of Mala on the Northeast coast of Lanzarote. There are no restrictions on entering the nudist village, since you don't need to be a member of a naturist organisation. Nudity is accepted everywhere, except in the shops and restaurants. In addition to very small beaches in the rocky coves, there is also a large tidal swimming pool which is frequently used by for nude swimming. The naturist village of Charco del Palo is near Mala on the northeast coast of Lanzarote. Nudity is commonplace here, except in the shops and restaurants. There are no restrictions on entering the nudist village, such as membership of a naturist organisation. In addition to a very small nudist beach on the rocky shore, there are several other areas for nude bathing with access to the sea. A large tidal swimming pool near the Restaurante Romantica is frequently used by naturists. Central to the village coastline is "Monkey's Rock" - a rocky outcrop with hand rails for safer bathing. Further south along the Charco del Palo coastline is another natural tidal pool with steps cut into the rock which make ideal platforms for nude sunbathing. Many villas are let and managed by Castillo de Papagayo S.L. a well established company which has been prominent in Charco del Palo for 30 years. Charco Natural also have naturist bungalows here . More accommodation is listed on asba-lanzarote. Peng Travel have self-catering apartments in Las Piteras, on the outskirts of Charco del Palo. More useful information on the village can be found on www.charcodelpalo.com. The whole place appears to be nude with signs outside restaurants advising people to wear a towel when eating. You will see people walking around compltely naked not only near the sea but walking down the streets and in the resturants. It is as free as you could want it to be. You should take a towel to sit on chairs etc (as is the normal ettiquette) but in general you can be naked anywhere.

Playa Matagorda, Lanzarote - Unofficial Nude BeachIf you follow the directions to Playa Guasimeta and continue walking along the wooden walkway for about 2km and turn sharp right at the end of the airport runway you'll reach Playa Matagorda. Both beaches are fairly clean. Playa Matagorda is the busier of the two and has basic facilities. It's easiest to reach from Matagorda town, northeast of Puerto del Carmen, walking towards the airport from the main beach.
Playa Matagorda and nearby Playa Guasimeta are located near Arrecife Airport, about halfway between Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife town. From the GC-720 road from Tias to Arrecife, take the turn off for Playa Honda, park about half a mile along this road and walk south to Playa Guasimeta and Playa de Matagorda. Both beaches are clean and have basic facilities, although Playa Matagorda is the busier of the two. There is considerable aircraft noise from behind the beach!

Punta del Papagayo, Lanzarote, Canary Island - Several Unofficial Nude BeachesThe Papagayo peninsula nudist beaches are at the southern end of Lanzarote, near Playa Blanca, the third largest resort on the island. Playa de Papagayo itself is rarely used for nude sunbathing for two reasons. Firstly, it is overlooked by the large restaurant which sits on the peninsula and, secondly, its reputation as the best beach on the island attracts many textile visitors. However, as you can see on the map below, there are several nudist beaches in the area. They are called Playa del Congrio, Playa Mujeres and Playa del Pozo. None of these beaches have facilities nearby so take everything you need with you.
The main attraction are the beaches of the Papagayo. The particular favourite is the Caleta del Congrio, the most easterly of the beaches there. The beach is sandy and rather dark in colour. As you approach the beach it is rather narrow and when the tide is in only a few feet lie between the sea and the bottom of the low cliff. However the beach soon opens up into a sweeping curve. It's never too crowded and has a high proportion of naturists using it. This beach often has a pleasant cooling breeze blowing along it so you don't cook in the sun. There are no facilities there which helps create that "getting away from it all" atmosphere.

Cala de Cotillo, Fuerteventura, Canary Island - Unofficial Nude BeachLike so many of the beaches on Fuerteventura, Cala de Cotillo Beach is considered suitable for naturist use. The best nudist beach for me is El Cotillo in FUERTEVENTURA, it is peacefull has beautiful white sand and calm lagoons with sand dunes, and there are no perverts going at it al over the place, and there are many children with parents. Elcotillo also has a very long straight beach which is used by the surfers, DON'T FOR GET IT'S HOT ALL YEAR. Happy holidays.

Playa Barca

Playa Barca, Fuerteventura, Canary Island - Unofficial Nude BeachPlaya Barca is the most northern of a string of nude beaches which run along the eastern side of the Jandia peninsula in southern Fuerteventura. It's near the village of Costa Calma, just north of the Hotel Sol Gorionnes and the main stretch of beach known as Playa de Sotavento. Playa Barca is also sometimes called Playa Esmeralda because of its proximity to the Hotel Playa Esmeralda. Like all the golden sandy beaches along this coast, Playa Barca is open and exposed to the elements, providing ideal wind surfing conditions.
Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder, and while Fuerteventura may at first sight not have that beauty, if you drive out into its hinterland it does have a rugged, timeless impact on the senses. It doesn't have the lush greenery of the Caribbean islands or the intimacy provided by the secluded bays of the Greek islands. However it more than compensates for the lack of these qualities by its elemental atmosphere; the landscape is prehistoric, which is exactly why the film One Million Years BC was shot on the neighbouring island of Lanzorote. But the world has moved on since those early special effects transformed Iguanas into man eating dinosaurs and you no longer have to wear a bikini made out of animal skin as Raquel Welch did. In fact you don't have to wear anything at all as, technically, public nudity is quite legal in Spain.
However, legal or not, our busy resort just didn't lend itself to taking all your clothes off so we hired a car and headed south where we had been told there were more suitable beaches. The eastern side of the island is known as the Costa Calma which easily translates into the Calm Coast, however this is a relative term. Fuerteventura is also well known as a windsurfers paradise and therein lies a clue; it seemed always, at the very least, breezy. Not that it was ever cold, but the wind did make the air fresh rather than balmy which, combined with the open aspect of the coastline, few dunes to shelter in and big, wide open bays, made nude sunbathing exposed in every sense of the word.
The place was Playa Barca which in our condensed guide book was described as "big" - they weren't exaggerating! Close to the Jandia National Park, the beach is wide, flat and goes on for miles, unbroken by rocks and backed by the low hills that ascend into the interior. There are one or two hotels and apartments but these are largely confined to its northern extremity, the largest of these being The Hotel Sol Gorionnes which rises like a mirage in the desert landscape and, if you take the time to walk through its grounds, is very much like an oasis with its palms and swimming pools. But back to the beach: It might not be everyone's ideal situation as a place to take all your clothes off being as exposed as it is, and exposure is what it's all about. If you are a discrete nudist, preferring dunes or small, sheltered bays, it isn't for you. But if you enjoy the wonderful feeling of liberty experienced by being naked in a wide open landscape, you'll love Playa Barca. There has to be a degree of exhibitionism involved, not only because of the open aspect of the place but also because not everyone is naked. Indeed you might be the only nude person for a hundred metres or more and you're exposed to the casual stares of everyone who walks past, from windsurfers in wetsuits to fully clothed trekkers walking the coastline. When we went naked there we had plenty of similar nude company but if you feel like leaving them behind and walking a couple of miles without cares or clothes to inhibit you, the sense of freedom is invigorating and exciting. The breeze always made the sea at least choppy but it was refreshing to bathe in and the sand is clean, firm and seemingly endless.
If you're unlucky that ever present wind might be cool enough to make a fur bikini desirable but in our experience sunburn was more of a danger than hypothermia and, while the fur might have been fake, your tan won't be.
